PETER RUEF

"EYES OF THE TRIBE"
The Old Masters - New Visions Painting Seminar

PROF. PHIL RUBINOV JACOBSON

Philip Rubinov Jacobson is is an artist, writer, teacher, philosopher and traveler and recognized as a key figure
in both the Fantastic and Visionary genres of art.

Considered a 'prodigy and problem child' by the public school system, he was sent to the University of Rochester at the age of 13 for studies in Biology and the Fine Arts. His negative experiences with the public school system would later contribute to the innovative and creative programming he developed in educational and cultural enrichment programs.

He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees (BS, MA and MFA) in Painting, Printmaking and Sculpture, with additional studies in Psychology, Philosophy and Comparative Religion. In 1973 - 74, Philip traveled to Vienna to live and study painting under Ernst Fuchs, the renowned artist and founder of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism.

In 1997 he was formally charged by his mentor to carry on the visionary lineage and teach by teaching the knowledge of the old masters in the art of painting. Philip's knowledge of painting prevails beneath the incredible versatility of his work. The artist is also an adjunct Art Professor/Lecturer for Vermont College of Art at Norwich University and Naropa University.

The artist has participated in more than 100 exhibitions and his writings have been read worldwide. He is the author of  " DRINKING LIGHTNING - Art, Creativity and Transformation from Shambhala and Marja Publications and PROMETHEAN FLAMES- Rekindling and Re-visioning the Creative Fire(write the author for a signed copy) with a Foreword by Prof. Michael Schwartz and Prlogue by Robyn Sean Peterson, from Betty & Books, Bologna, Italy (Summer 2008). This series of books on art and consciousness will culminate in his forthcoming monumental work- “EYES OF THE SOUL - Exploring Inspiration in Art” with a Foreword from his friend, Ken Wilber.

Rubinov's travels have been extensive, including India, where he studied meditation and Easter Philosophy with Muktananda Paramahansa, Eastern philosophy and completed training as a teacher in the Muktananda lineage and tradion. After this he wandered naked with a band of sadhus in 1978. He has also studied and practiced many of the World Wisdom traditions and the Martial Arts of Kodakan Judo and Aikido Sword.

Philip has been a strong voice and active proponent for the spiritual power inherent in the creative process and in 1981 he co- founded and directed what was the first Institute for Contemplative Education and Visionary Art in the United States, located in upstate New York.  From 1983 -1986 he served as the Cultural Arts and Gallery Director at the JCC of Rochester, NY. In 1995, the professor founded and directed the School of Extended Studies at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado where he served as the Dean of Extended Studies from 1991-1997.

In addition to his endeavors in the Fine Arts, earlier in his life, Prof. Phil also worked as a therapeutic counselor who often used the arts as a tool for treatment with dual-diagnosed clients, the developmentally disabled, youth-at-risk, incarcerated minors and adults. During this time Prof Phil also authored the "Gesture Dictionary" for the Colorado Board of Psychiatrists and Association of Care-Givers. This book outlined observations he gathered from one-on-one experiences with deeply disturbed clients that the system was 'at a loss' to deal with. This activity had never been attempted before. Through this one-on-one and live-in situation the professor discovered and illustrated antecedents to psychotic behaviors common to the population he worked with. He followed up by consulting the Board on behavior modification plans he devised and implemented for this particular population. He also introduced an Arts Enrichment Program for the Rochester, NY Public School System designed to raise self-esteem among inner-city youth in the urban school districts. This culminated in workshops, annual exhibitions and murals by participating students.

His paintings are in private collections throughout the United States, Austria, Germany, Italy, Holland, Russia, India, Japan and in museum collections such as the Memorial Art Gallery in New York, the Johfra Museum of Art in Holland and the City art collection of Viechtach, Bavaria. His writings and art work have been the focus of numerous magazine articles, television and radio interviews and featured in books such as “One Source - Sacred Journeys: A Celebration of Spirit & Art” by Gary Markowitz and most recently in Volume I; “METAMORPHOSIS - 50 Contemporary Surreal, Fantastic and Visionary Artists” from Jon Beinart Publishing. He is an Honorary Member of the London-based Society for Art of the Imagination.

Prof. Phil has been holding his renowned international painting seminars: "Old Masters-New Visions" since 1997.  He continues to paint, write and teach and his long-range vision includes establishing Villa Visionaria, a cooperative community of inspired creative workers that will include a gallery, integral arts academy and apprenticeship program.

HONORED GUEST ARTISTS:

KUBA AMBROSE

Born on December 17th 1982 in Melbourne, Australia, Kuba is a painter and poet working predominately in the area of visionary/mystic art. A number of early experiences fostered an interest in fantastic art and spirituality. Brought up by Polish parents, a graphic designer and a devout catholic mother, both of whom influenced his path as an artist. In 2006 Kuba completed a Bachelor of Painting at RMIT before embarking on a nine month journey to Europe to further his growing interest in renaissance art. In 2007 he spent six months working as a painting apprentice for Austrian artist Prof. Ernst Fuchs.
In 2008 Kuba was employed at Victorian Art Conservation where he worked as a picture framer and art restorer. During this period he began a cycle of painting exploring the ‘divine influx’ expressing the interplay of divine forces within the receptive vessel of the human being. Ambrose’s travels led him to Jordan, Israel, Bali  and Far North Queensland. In 2011 he was invited to teach the ‘misch technik’ during a ten day painting retreat in Ubud, Bali. This was followed by the ‘InSpire’ workshop in Cairns and the ‘Sacred Realms’ and ‘Sacred Visions’ seminars in Melbourne together with Daniel Mirante and Basia Wiacek. In 2012 he travelled to Torri Superiore in Italy to take part in the ‘Expanded Visions in the MischTechnik’ hosted by Laurence Caruana.
His artwork has been exhibited internationally and can be found in numerous art collections.
Kuba is currently based in Vienna, Austria where he will be teaching as a lecturer at the Vienna Academy of Visionary Art.

OTTO RAPP

Born in 1944 in Felixdorf, Lower Austria, Otto lived and was educated in Vienna, where later he worked as a clerk in the Transport and Insurance Business. After completing service in the Austrian Air Force, he traveled throughout Europe, eventually settling in Stockholm, Sweden.

As a Painter he was initially self taught, studying in the various Galleries and Museums. In Vienna, Otto was often ‘hanging out’ at the Akademie der Bildenden Kuenste, where he admired the work of the
Wiener Schule des Phantastischen Realismusrepresented there by the Professors Ernst Fuchs, Rudolf Hausner and Arik Brauer. In Stockholm, Otto found out that he was washing dishes in the very same Restaurant where years earlier another Viennese Artist, Fritz Hundertwasser , the ‘Austrian Gaudi’ as he was later known as, had worked the same job. Encouraged by an art dealer in Gamla Stan, Otto began to paint more seriously. Busking on the streets of Gamla Stan with a Dutch artist, his very first painting was sold to a passer-by by his artist friend while Otto stood in the employment office line - this paid for a lavish meal for both of them that day.

Traveling around in 1968, Otto wound up in Western Canada where he eventually settled in Lethbridge, Alberta, the place Otto still calls home today. It was in Canada where the majority of Otto's mature work was produced (under the sponsorship of a small Lethbridge Gallery).

Working for the Canadian Pacific Railway, he quit in 1977 to attend the Bachelor of Fine Arts Program at the University of Lethbridge, graduating (with great distinction) in 1982.

In Canada, Otto participated in many exhibitions, and held several Solo Shows, culminating in the pivotal 1994 showing atThe Prairie Art Gallery in Grande Prairie, Alberta, which earned him the moniker The Mystic .

Throughout his years in Canada, Otto had been the subject of many reviews and newspaper articles as well as local television shows in Calgary and Lethbridge while being active as an Artist, Art Instructor, Curator, Studio Technician, Art Critic and Juror.

Otto is currently residing in Vienna, Austria, working in his studio at the Palais Palffy, which also houses the
Phantasten Museum Wien.

SABINA NORE

As a young girl Sabina often spent time dabbling at her uncle’s and aunt’s atelier; seduced by the aromas and the magical atmosphere, these sessions undoubtedly set the base for her artistic development. A treasure hunter at heart and fascinated with the diversity of cultures and people, she was especially infatuated with anything that seemed different or exotic, be it trinkets from far-away countries, customs from distant lands, or new ways of approaching old habits. This passion and curiosity also led to her interest in psychology.
She studied music at the conservatory (music academy) of Vienna to which she was accepted at a young age of 12, joining the class of Prof. Inge Scholl-Kremmel for classical guitar. Her interests and talents were always wide-spread, yet the focus of her passions most firmly remained on the visual arts, psychology and writing. Despite her status as a musical prodigy, she left the conservatory and turned to painting. She studied fine arts and psychology; although she ceased formal studies, she vowed to never stop learning and advancing in these fields.
Sabina Nore currently lives and works in Vienna, Austria. Her art has been described as surrealism, fantastic or visionary art, poetic symbolism and others. They are possibly all applicable for the simple reason her art is as versatile as her personality.

Artist Trivia
Sabina Nore had a near-death experience at the age of one which close friends speculate to have given her “an edge” in life.

ALEXANDER POSSEGGER - AUT
Geb. 25.03.1976 in Schwarzach St./Veit
Vater von zwei Buben (Liam 10 und Bruno 7 Jahre alt)
Astrologe und Ernährungsinformant bei „Dancing Shiva“ Wien
Autodidakte Malerei seit 1998

BETH LERMAN - USA

Beth Lerman was raised near San Francisco where she began oil painting at the age of five. She took lessons throughout her early childhood but did not become serious about her love for painting until she was a junior in college. Her first painting as an adult was of the Greek  goddess, Athena, which she rendered in acrylics after studying the Greek pantheon in an art history course.  In 2008, she decided that she needed further instruction to be able to achieve the realism for which she strove, and she began studying under the watchful  eye of portrait artist, Amanda Cadogan, in Chicago.  It was at this time that Lerman abandoned the use of acrylics for a Renaissance technique which, again, employed the use of oil paints. After moving to New York in 2009, she continued honing her skills in this style until 2010 when she became assistant to international gallery artist, Madeline von Foerster. Von Foerster introduced Lerman to the “Mische  Technique" which Lerman has continued to use since. She is currently at work on a series of paintings based  on the Rider-Waite tarot deck.

EVA LENE KNOLL

JODY FLORMAN - USA

Jody's interest in the arts began at an early age. She enjoyed experimenting with a variety of mediums until she reached college. There she chose a major in art and narrowed her interests to mixed media sculpture and painting on fabric and canvas. She graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz.

After graduation, she worked as a stylist for commercials and department stores, then went on to the garment industry as a clothing and fabric designer/merchandiser in Los Angeles, New York and India. Color, texture and form were always a focal point.

Moving to London in she was a costumer for television, stage and film. Here she was introduced to the decorative arts. Her interest became a passion, then a career. Essentially self-taught, she attended various seminars, developing her talents in faux finishing, trompe l'oeil and mural painting. Over the next few years, she received residential and commercial commissions in London.

Returning to the United States, she expanded her artistic and painting repertoire receiving commissions high-end residences and commercial establishments throughout California, Colorado, Florida, Arizona, New Mexico, Maryland and Virginia.

Though Jody has painted commission paintings (covering a variety of subjects) for over 15 years, she chooses to integrate the deeper spiritual side of her life through her expression on canvas. She traveled to Spain and Austria to learn the “Miche”, mixed technique, and portrait techniques from Robert Venosa, Martina Hoffmann and Professor Phillip Rubinov Jacobson, discovering a rich new avenue, making it possible to place her visions directly on canvas. Her colors are bold and vibrant. Her portraits sparkle..

A versatile and creative artist, Jody specializes in a wide variety of faux finishes. She creates custom stencil designs, is an accomplished muralist, landscape and architectural Trompe L'oeil artist. She is currently accepting commissions for her visionary art portraiture, florals, and landscapes.

Jody loves to work with designers, architects, contractors or individual clients to create unique, exciting concepts and finishes for their projects.

Magdalena Tomaszewicz was born in Gdansk, Poland and relocated to England in 2006. She is a serious Buddhist practitioner in the Vajrayana tradition of the Kagyu lineage. Her practice serves as one of the sources of inspiration for her art and her artist’s signature, ‘Mantra Cora’.
2011 marked a significant year for her as she participated in the Old Masters – New Visions painting seminar in Austria studying Renaissance techniques with Prof. Philip Rubinov Jacobson and meeting the renowned artists of Vienna connected to the School of Fantastic Realism. In January, 2012 she spent another month on the island of Bermuda in an intensive painting workshop. 2013 marks the final year of her studies in the Visual Arts at The University of Salford. Her tenure has included drawing and painting as an Erasmus Exchange Student in Macerata, Italy and an internship at the Phantasten Museum in Vienna, Austria assisting the internationally renowned artist, Ernst Fuchs. The artist currently resides in Manchester where she maintains an active studio in painting, mixed-media, digital art and photography. She now serves as a permanent painting-instructor for the Old Masters-New Visions international painting seminars and is also working on a book  entitled ‘The Hand-book of Creativity’.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Although my work has a vast range in style and content there are ‘constants’ that run through everything, expressing the ‘layers of being’ within. A thematic fiber that weaves through all of my work and the creative process itself is the perennial questions that permeate my life from the mundane activities of everyday living to the awe-inspiring ecstatic states that I may experience. My Buddhist practice, Jungian insights, the world wisdom traditions and my travels all inform my work in the manner of a detailed but unified landscape. In support of such a deep exploration and expression I have adopted a spectrum of technical knowledge ranging from renaissance techniques of painting to modern methods and materials. I combine preparation with natural and spontaneous execution, moving from realism to the abstract.
Sometimes I think of myself as a ‘layerist’. That is, I enjoy the multidimensional properties that an old masters’ painting technique can provide, reflecting the many layers that is life itself. I also find it fascinating how light and depth can unfold through a painting done in this manner and how it directly corresponds to my experiments in multi-media.

I aspire to be an artistic instrument and a consciousness cartographer of sorts. I aim to create works that move dramatically, without embarrassment, and execute gestures without shame; that move through and integrates the world of emotion, insight and form. I am thrilled when the organic quality of my work moves of its own volition and with a passion to communicate an inner freedom to the outer theater of life, dissolving into the destination of an illuminated consciousness. My intention is to create a non-denominational art, crossing over to connect worlds within worlds, revealing a unity while respecting diversity.

MELODIA ROCHE - USA

Melodia Anastasia Roche is a self-taught oil painter, looking to promote awareness, beauty and creative genius through her Visionary artwork. Melodia was born on October 19th 1992 and grew up in the small mountain town of Nederland, just outside Boulder Colorado. She still resides outside Nederland where she can enjoy the peace, solidarity and freedom of the Colorado mountains, a perfect location to catalyze her paintings. She is also a chemical engineering major, often integrating her passion for science with her passion for art. In her spare time she also thoroughly loves gardening, hiking, writing poetry and attending live musical performances.
Artists Statement: I strive to capture and then document emotions and fleeting ideas from my personal journey through life in a way that transcends written form. Painting presents me with a key to accessing and connecting with my subconscious mind, whereby I become a student of my own self-awareness. I am constantly astounded by the images that materialize before me after completing my own paintings. I simply let my mind take my art where it leads me at the present moment. Artwork in all its forms, whether it be music, painting, poetry or any other manner of artistic expression, is the most powerful means of communication on the planet. We all connect deeply by way of the creativity we manifest through language, paintings, music, etc; creating order through creative chaos by fully connecting with one another. I strive to evoke passions and awareness by sharing snapshots from my own life and spirit, from the mountains that inspire me everyday, to the music that moves my soul. Transferring my thoughts and feelings to canvas is what makes me feel most closely connected to creation itself.

Three of her books,
in the graphic novel style, were published by the Sparkplug Comuic Books
 ( Portland, Oregon).
Her art genres include painting, mixed media, dioramas,
shadow puppetry.

SOFIA BOGDANOVIC - UK

Painting for me is commitment, a form of meditation. I see it as a tool, an interface between the personal self and collective consciousness, for the purpose of personal and maybe global healing and evolution. By trusting the “the language of light”, the rational mind is bypassed and yet it’s work consists of striving to capture some of the essence and, improving the methods to do so. This work is an effort towards Union between the intuitive and the rational mind. Universe may be seen as a constant dynamic interplay of polar opposites. The Divine Feminine Principle has never truly left and She/Gaia/Shakti is calling us back. The sooner we consciously use our heart’s wisdom and intelligence, the sooner we are able to live the reality that we desire and that is the calling and the challenge of this amazing time we live in.
